Client Situation
Zimmer Spine wanted an aesthetic and ergonomic redesign to create a more inviting, usable tool set that would streamline the surgical procedure. They came to Worrell looking for a partner in conceptualizing and redesigning a new improved tool set. They wanted to create the feel of a set while designing three separate tools with different degree angles, a pedicle measurer and a tensioner.
Result
Worrell enhanced user experience and ergonomics by reducing the horn size of the angled tools which resulted in a sleeker appearance. We modified the handles to create a more substantial grip increasing precision during surgery.
They were also slimmed down and edges smoothed to create a softer, ergonomic feel and reduce overall weight. We also modified the set screw driver interface to provide a flatter plane, giving a more secure and accurate perception and improved the docking system giving the opportunity for a more refined appearance.
Worrell created three different degrees of angled tools all distinguishable due to their inherent proportions, unique features and laser etched labels. They also shared the style of the pedicle measurer and tensioner creating a unified set.
Over all the new tool set created less physician hand fatigue and shortened the procedure time by making the surgery more intuitive and streamlined.
